Installation and use of high-speed oil seals
2026-03-08 19:53:23

Due to the presence of an oil film controlled by the edge of the oil seal between the oil seal and the shaft, this oil film has fluid lubrication properties. Under the action of liquid surface tension, the stiffness of the oil film is just enough to form a crescent shaped surface at the contact end between the oil film and air, preventing leakage of the working medium and achieving sealing of the shaft. The sealing ability of an oil seal depends on the thickness of the oil film on the sealing surface. If the thickness is too large, the oil seal will leak; If the thickness is too small, dry friction may occur, causing wear on the oil seal and shaft; If there is no oil film between the sealing lip and the shaft, it is easy to cause heating and wear. Therefore, during installation, it is necessary to apply some oil on the sealing ring and ensure that the skeleton oil seal is perpendicular to the axis centerline. If it is not vertical, the sealing lip of the oil seal will discharge lubricating oil from the shaft, which can also cause excessive wear of the sealing lip. During the operation, the lubricant in the housing leaks slightly, forming an oil film on the sealing surface.

There are also several points to pay attention to when using high-speed oil seals:

Some equipment is used in harsh environments, such as extreme cold. At this time, the oil seal selected should be made of a relatively cold-resistant material; or if it is used outdoors, exposed to the sun and rain, ordinary rubber will In this case, the oil is prone to aging. Should you choose the material or replace the oil seal frequently? These issues need to be considered when using high-speed oil seals.
